Welcome back to Dusty Workbench! In today's post, we're diving into an exciting project where I tried my hand at laser engraving on jeans. My wife shared an intriguing design she found online, and I decided to see if I could replicate it using our 100W CO2 laser. Join me as I walk you through the process, the challenges, and the results of this creative experiment.

Getting Started

I began by finding some old jeans that were no longer needed. After creating a design in Canva, I set up the laser machine and started the engraving process. One of the initial challenges was figuring out the right strength and speed settings for the laser to avoid burning through the fabric.

First Attempt

For the first trial, I used a low laser power setting. The design included butterflies and a dandelion. While the dandelion came out okay, the butterflies were not very clear. It was a decent start, but I knew there was room for improvement.

Adjusting the Settings

To improve the results, I increased the laser power slightly and used a different design with more depth. This time, the design was clearer and more distinct, although using a piece of wood to keep the fabric flat might have given even better results.

Learning About the Material

During the engraving process, I learned that laser engraving on jeans weakens the material because it burns off a layer of the fabric. Additionally, the light color of the engraved areas tends to wash out over time. This realization led me to think about using the jean material in a different way.

Exploring New Ideas

Inspired by the look of the engraved designs, I decided to create coasters using the jean material and resin epoxy. I started with our Dusty Workbench logo, testing different jean fabrics. This experiment revealed that the laser settings needed to be adjusted for each type of fabric to avoid burning through.

Final Designs and Epoxy Coating

I created several designs, including some D&D-themed ones for my son. After cutting out the designs, I glued them onto plywood coasters. However, the stretchy nature of the jean material made it challenging to get a perfect fit.

Applying the Epoxy

Applying the resin epoxy was another learning curve. The epoxy tended to wick over the edges of the stretchy jean fabric, causing it to overflow. Despite these issues, the final coasters looked promising after sanding the edges and applying a second coat of epoxy.

Reflecting on the Results

While the resin-coated coasters had a unique look, the engraved designs became too dark, losing some of their appeal. To address this, I tried using a clear coat instead of epoxy. The clear coat preserved the blue color of the jeans and made the designs stand out more clearly.

Conclusion

This project was a valuable learning experience. Laser engraving on jeans presents unique challenges, but it also opens up exciting possibilities for creative designs. Using the right techniques and materials, you can achieve some stunning results.
