DIY Faux Window | Made From an Old Table
Have you ever stared at a blank wall and wished you could fill it with something truly unique and personal? Well, that's exactly what my wife and I did. We decided to create a full-sized window to add a touch of character and light to our home. And the best part? We used materials we already had lying around the house!
The Inspiration
The idea for this project came from our desire to match the style of a nearby door. We wanted a window with similar reflection glass, so we decided to get creative with our materials. Instead of purchasing new wood, we looked around our home for something we could repurpose.
Finding the Perfect Canvas
Our search led us to an old, worn-out table. It was covered in dead plants and looked like it was ready for the trash. But with a little cleaning and sanding, we saw its potential. The table's surface would be the perfect base for our window frame.
The Design Process
We didn't have a detailed plan for this project. Instead, we let our imaginations run wild. We envisioned a vintage-style window with a rustic charm. We started by gathering reclaimed cedar boards from an old fence in our backyard. These boards had been used in a few other DIY projects, and we still had plenty left.
The Build
We began by cutting the cedar boards to size. We wanted the window to be proportional and visually appealing, so we took our time with the measurements. We used a dry-fit method to ensure the pieces fit together well before securing them with glue and splines.
The Glass
We reused the glass from the old table. To give it the reflective quality we desired, we sprayed the back side black. We also primed and painted the wooden frame to match the style of our home.
The Box
To create a planter for the window, we built a simple box using the same reclaimed wood. We added drain holes to prevent water buildup and reinforced the box with screws.
The Finishing Touches
Once the window and box were complete, we carefully glued the glass into the frame. We then attached the box to the back of the window using silicone and screws.
The Reveal
After adding the finishing touches, we hung the window on the wall. It was a beautiful addition to our home, and we were thrilled with the results. The reclaimed materials gave the window a unique character, and the vintage-style design complemented the rest of our decor.
Conclusion
This DIY project was a fun and rewarding experience. It showed us that with a little creativity and resourcefulness, we can transform everyday objects into something truly special. If you're looking for a unique way to add personality to your home, consider creating a custom window using reclaimed materials.
