Workshop Overhaul Step 2: Workshop Storage and Fixing the Planer Moulder

Hey everyone, welcome back to part two of my workshop overhaul here at Dusty Workbench.

In this episode, I'm tackling this 4x8ft section of the shop. My goal is to create dedicated storage for all my hand tools and eliminate those pesky horizontal surfaces that always end up piled high with junk.

I also want to find a better home for my Ryobi tools. My friend kindly 3D-printed some holders for them last year, and I'm finally ready to put them to use.

I'm not entirely sure what the final design will look like, but I'm thinking of building some sort of cabinet. I might even explore the option of using repurposed kitchen or garage cabinets.

Before I can start building, I need to clear the area. This involves a major clean-up, removing old projects, and getting rid of some equipment I no longer use, like the planer.

The Planer Dilemma

I decided to start by taking apart the planer. It's a 13" planer/moulder from King Industrial, a very capable machine, but it's too big for my current needs. Plus, one of the rollers is worn out.

Taking it apart was a bit of a challenge, but I managed to figure it out without a manual (which, in hindsight, might have been helpful!). I discovered that the worn-out roller is easily replaceable, but I need to find out the cost and availability of the replacement part before making any decisions.

Next Steps

This video ends with the planer partially disassembled. I'll be researching the cost of the replacement roller and deciding whether to repair it or sell it as-is.

In the next episode, I'll continue the clean-up, finalize the cabinet design, and hopefully start construction.

Stay tuned for more updates on my workshop overhaul!
