Upcycling Kitchen Cabinet Doors into Wall Art: A Step-by-Step Guide

While the video doesn't delve into every detail, here's a general step-by-step approach to upcycle your old cabinet doors into beautiful wall art:

Materials:

  • Old cabinet door
  • Sandpaper (various grits)
  • Drop cloths or tarp (optional)
  • Cleaning supplies (soap, water)
  • Paint (primer, base coat, optional accent colors)
  • Paint brushes or rollers
  • Drop cloths or tarp (for painting)
  • Safety gear (dust mask, gloves, optional safety glasses)
  • Hardware (optional: hooks, hangers, sawtooth hangers)
  • Design elements (stencils, stamps, decoupage materials, depending on your chosen design)
  • Sealant (optional, for extra protection)
  • Screwdriver (for removing hardware)
  • Laser (we love our laser) You can find options of a laser that can manage cutting 1/8" wood and other projects here --> Amazon affiliate link: https://amzn.to/442rtqB

Step 1: Prep the Cabinet Door

  1. Remove Hardware: Use a screwdriver to remove any existing hinges, knobs, or handles. Fill any screw holes with wood putty and allow it to dry completely. Sand the filled areas smooth.
  2. Clean the Surface: Wipe down the entire door with a damp cloth and mild soap solution to remove dust, grease, or grime. Let the door dry completely.
  3. Sanding: Using a medium-grit sandpaper, sand the entire surface of the door to remove any remaining dirt and create a smooth base for paint. Wipe away dust with a damp cloth and allow the door to dry completely. Depending on the desired finish, you may want to follow up with a finer-grit sandpaper for a super smooth surface.

Step 2: Paint and Design

  1. Prime the Door: Apply a coat of primer suitable for your chosen paint type. This helps the paint adhere better and provides a more even finish. Let the primer dry completely, following the manufacturer's instructions.
  2. Base Coat: Apply your chosen base coat paint color. Opt for multiple thin coats for a smoother finish. Allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next.
  3. Get Creative!: Here's where the video shines! It will showcase various design techniques you can implement. This could involve using stencils, stamps, decoupage, or freehand painting to create your desired artwork on the door.

Step 3: Finishing Touches

  1. Sealant (Optional): For extra protection and a polished look, apply a coat of clear sealant suitable for your chosen paint type. Allow it to dry completely.
  2. Hardware (Optional): Reattach the original hardware or choose new decorative pieces to complement your design.
  3. Hanging: Depending on your chosen hardware, attach hooks, hangers, or sawtooth hangers to the back of the door for easy wall mounting.

Remember: This is just a general guide. The video will show the techniques in action, allowing you to see how they translate to a finished product. Let the video inspire your creativity and personalize your upcycled cabinet door with your own artistic flair!
